Now that we are in the heart of summer, I hope you’re finding time to rest, recharge, and maybe even put your feet in the sand. At Guardian Nurses, we’re all for taking a break—but we also know that your health doesn’t go on vacation just because you do.

Whether you’re headed to the beach, the mountains, or just the backyard hammock, it’s easy to slip into full vacation mode. But while your brain might be checked out (with a nice, cold umbrella drink in hand), your body still needs care and attention.

That’s why in this issue of The Flame, we’re sharing smart, simple tips to help you stay healthy and safe while you enjoy your time off.

Because sunburns, surprise illnesses, and medication mishaps? Definitely not the kind of souvenirs you want to bring home.

— Betty Long, RN, MHA, President/CEO, Guardian Nurses Health Advocates

Last July, one of our nurses got a frantic call from a patient who had just landed in Florida. She was on vacation with her family, finally enjoying a break after a long, stressful year. But somewhere between the sunscreen and the sandals, she realized: she’d forgotten her heart medication.

Cue the panic. Cue the, “I can’t believe I did this.” But here’s the good news: she had a Guardian Nurse on her side. With a few phone calls, we coordinated with her home pharmacy, found a nearby location in Florida that could fill the prescription, and made sure her insurance would cover it. Crisis averted. Beach day saved.

The truth is, summer travel brings joy—but it also brings surprises. That’s why, while your suitcase may be packed and your GPS ready to go, we’re here with a gentle reminder:

Your health doesn’t go on vacation just because you do.

1. Prescriptions: Don’t Leave Home Without ‘Em

Running out of your medications two days into a mountain getaway is not the adventure anyone signed up for. Before you travel:

  • Double-check that you have enough medication for your whole trip—plus a few extra days in case of delays.
  • Keep meds in their original containers, especially if you’re flying.
  • If you use injectables, inhalers, or refrigerated meds, make sure you’ve got a plan for proper storage en route.

Tip: Take a photo of your prescription labels and store them on your phone. If something gets lost or stolen, that info can help a pharmacy or provider get you back on track faster.

2. Know Before You Go: Local Care Access

Whether you’re heading to the Jersey Shore or off to Tuscany, look up nearby medical facilities before you need them. A quick search can save hours of stress later.

  • For domestic travel, check if your health insurance has in-network urgent care or telehealth options.
  • For international trips, consider travel insurance that includes medical coverage, especially if your regular plan doesn’t extend overseas.

💡 And if you work with a Guardian Nurse, don’t forget—we’re just a phone call away, no matter where your flip-flops take you.

3. Red Flags to Watch For

Vacations often involve changes—new foods, long flights, more sun, less sleep. It’s easy to ignore a weird symptom when you’re trying to relax, but some things should never be brushed off:

  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or dizziness
  • High fever or signs of infection
  • Unusual swelling, especially in legs after a long flight

When in doubt, seek care. Your memories of vacation should involve postcards and piña coladas—not visits to the ER.

4. Telehealth is Your Travel Buddy

Many health plans now offer 24/7 virtual care services—perfect when you’re unsure if you need in-person help. A quick video visit can provide peace of mind (or a prescription) without derailing your day. Check with your health insurer.

Tip: Don’t forget to take your health insurance card with you. Access numbers are often printed on the back of the card.

5. Advocate on the Go

Even when you’re traveling, you’re still your best advocate. Ask questions. Speak up if something feels off. And if you need backup, Guardian Nurses is just a phone call away.

So go ahead, cue up that vacation playlist. Lather up the SPF. Eat the gelato. Stay safe, stay smart, and stay sunscreened.

The Flame will return in September! Enjoy your summer!
