For Carolann and Joe McFadden, navigating the complexities of healthcare in their 80s has been overwhelming at times. Between oncology appointments, heart specialists, dermatologists, and insurance concerns, the couple often found themselves lost in what Joe calls “the maze of doctors, appointments, and insurance issues.”

That’s when Guardian Nurse Jennifer Kenny, BSN, RN stepped in. A dedicated advocate serving retirees of Sheet Metal Workers Local 19, Kenny has been a steady guide for the McFaddens both in Florida and now back in Pennsylvania.

At first, Joe assumed Guardian Nurses was only available in the Philadelphia area. He was surprised — and relieved — to learn that Nurse Kenny could help even while they were living in Florida. She supported them through serious health issues there, guiding them with the same compassion and professionalism that would later prove essential when they returned home.

After moving back to Pennsylvania, the McFaddens needed a fresh start with their care. Nurse Kenny stepped in to find all of their new doctors — from oncologists to cardiologists and even a dermatologist. She came to their home to set up online patient portals, knowing the couple wasn’t fully comfortable with computers, and walked them through the process step by step. And when the medical visits themselves felt overwhelming, she didn’t just prepare them — she accompanied them, asking the right questions and ensuring they understood every answer.

“Jennifer has been a godsend,” Joe says simply. “She alleviated so much of the pressure we felt. We’re not computer savvy, and she has been right there to support us, making sure we understand everything. Her professionalism and compassion are unmatched.”

The McFaddens are quick to express their gratitude not only to Nurse Kenny, but also to Local 19 for ensuring members have access to this level of care — no matter where they live. “It’s wonderful to know that this service is there for retirees of Local 19 like us,” Joe adds. “We want other members to realize it’s available to them, too. It’s invaluable.”

For the McFaddens, having an advocate like Jennifer Kenny means more than just managing medical logistics — it means peace of mind, confidence, and comfort through life’s most challenging healthcare moments.
